Lord of the Rings and Titanic actor Bernard Hill dies at 79

Bernard Hill, actor best known for his roles in “Titanic” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, has died at the age of 79.

Hill played the famous Captain Edward Smith, who went down with his sinking ship in James Cameron's historic hit film “Titanic,” and later reprized JRR Tolkien's literary classic when he played the role of Theoden , king of Rohan in the film adaptation of the book.

Hill's agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed the news to the BBC on Sunday. The actor reportedly died in the early hours of May 5. His family is expected to release a statement shortly.

Hill's notoriety had spread to all countries in the 1980s and 1990s with roles in the biopic “Gandhi”, starring Sir Ben Kingsley, and in the action thriller “The Ghost and the Darkness”, alongside by Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas.

And few actors can boast of having worked on films as lauded as “Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” which each won 13 and 11 Oscars respectively.

Reflecting on his work in the second and third of the fantasy trilogy, Hill said: “I loved every minute of every day that I spent on Lord of the Rings. »
