Madonna ended her “Celebration” tour with a trip to the beach: to Rio de Janeiro's famous Copacabana Beach, to be exact, where on Saturday night she performed a huge free show for some 1.6 million fans. It was the final performance of her retrospective tour around the world as well as her only “Celebration” date in South America and she brought together the largest live crowd of her career.
The estimate of 1.6 million came from Riotur, the city's official tourism agency. Madonna, who has not performed in Brazil since 2012, gushed about the evening on Instagram: “Words cannot express my gratitude!” she wrote in the caption of a drone video showing the beachfront filled with fans. Like with other In the “Celebration” shows, she invited local stars on stage with her: in Rio, her guests were Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar, the latter helping Madonna turn her track “Music” into a samba.
Copacabana Beach has a history of big pop shows: in 2006, the Rolling Stones played for about 1.5 million there, while a 1994 New Year's Eve show with Rod Stewart would have attracted some 4.2 million participants.
