After releasing “Commander In Chief,” a blatantly anti-Trump anthem co-written with Julia Michaels, Finneas, Justin Tranter and Eren Cannata, Demi Lovato delivered a heartwarming performance of the single at the Billboard Music Awards on Wednesday night.

NBC reportedly edited from the show the word “VOTE” in large letters behind it during Lovato’s pre-recorded performance. The network posted the original edition of Lovato’s performance on their website, with the large backdrop appearing at the end, but that version was not shown on the Billboard Music Awards telecast. Instead, Lovato’s performance ended with a close-up of the singer looking at her piano, without a “VOTE” visual. Before the telecast ended, the NBC Entertainment account tweeted a photo of Lovato’s performance with “VOTE” being a dominant aspect. Although this image was not released, Lovato retweeted it without comment.

NBC is expected to air a town hall with Trump on Thursday night.

Lovato wasn’t the only artist to encourage viewers to vote during the telecast. Pop stars Billie Eilish and Lizzo shared civic duty messages in their acceptance speeches, the latter wearing a dress decorated with ‘vote’.

Following Lovato’s performance, the clip for “Commander In Chief” dropped on YouTube. Black, deaf and hard of hearing children, wheelchair users, queer and native people come together to sing Lovato’s lyrics: “If I did what you do / I couldn’t sleep, seriously / Do you even know the truth? / We are in a state of crisis, people are dying / While you line your pockets / Commander in chief, how does it feel to be still / to be able to breathe? “

Lovato, a queer Hispanic, responded to criticism of her policy on Instagram, sharing that she is more interested in expressing her beliefs as an American than in pleasing her fans.
