Sun ‘N Fun Aerospace’s annual cancellation is canceled
LAKELAND, Fla. – The Aerospace Center of Excellence (ACE) officially canceled this year’s Sun ‘N Fun Aerospace exhibition this week. It was originally delayed until the first weekend in May due to concerns about coronavirus.

Each year, more than 200,000 people attend the Sun ‘N’ Fun Aerospace Expo held at the Lakeland Linder International Airport. It is the world’s second largest air show.
“It’s devastating. It’s really awful,” said Greg Gibson, director of marketing at the organization. “You’ve been working hard for many years to revive something like this, and we never planned to not perform.”
Gibson said once the costs were paid, the expo typically brings in about $ 3.5 million. This funds much of the organization’s operating budget – of which $ 2 million goes into educational programs and scholarships for high school students learning to become pilots.
“It’s not the ultimate type of situation, but it’s certainly going to be very painful, as our educational programs rely on this event for 80 percent of their income,” Gibson explained. “It’s definitely going to be a challenge to keep everything going at the pace we love until we get to the 2021 event.”
With another blow, the nonprofit’s planned expansion of a museum in Florida to add a multi-million dollar STEM learning facility called “Project Sky Lab” is also on standby.
Just this January they announced that they were ahead of schedule on the project.
“It’s really a shift,” Gibson said. “Our efforts will continue. It will bring us down, but it will not bring us down.”
Gibson had some comforting news – the nonprofit did not have to fire anyone.
I hope people will donate to help the organization move. They even sell T-shirts labeled “The Greatest Air Show That Never Happened” on their sleeve to add some humor to the situation.
ACE staff is also planning virtual events like Facebook live, webinars and videos where viewers will hear the latest story from many performers and interact with them in ways they never could on an air show.
Dates for these events have not yet been set, but are scheduled for April.
The nonprofit also plans two smaller flights for the fall, one dedicated to domestic airplanes with takeoff and landing competition and the other to vintage and warbird aircraft. A ticket will be entered, but organizers say it will be smaller than the exhibit.
