Kananesgi’s fashion show scheduled for November 5

Cherokee, North Carolina – After a successful virtual event in 2021, Kananesgi’s annual fashion show is set to return live – this time at Harrahs Cherokee Casino and Resort. This new space will allow for major event expansions, including the Kananesgi Art Market to be held on Saturday, November 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverwalk Boutiques. The market will feature over 35 EBCI artists and creators. At 5:30 p.m., models will parade through the Council Fire Ballroom for the Kananesgi Fashion Show, showcasing custom creations from EBCI designers and special guest designers. This year’s event will also include the inaugural Fire Art Contest, which highlights artists and creators from the Eastern Band Cherokee. $38,000 in prizes will be awarded in over 11 artistic categories. The Art Market and Art Exhibition are exclusive to EBCI for attendees but open to the public.

The Kananesgi Art Market and Fashion Show is a collaboration between the Sequoyah Fund and the Ray Kinsland Leadership Institute. It was first launched in 2018 as a platform for artists and designers to express their creativity, receive professional training and business development, increase workforce development and to enable EBCI citizens to discover and express their unique identity as Cherokee people. The designs feature original and traditional patterns for children and adults. They bring a Cherokee touch to contemporary fashion that is comfortable and fashionable. The November event is sponsored by the Cherokee Preservation Foundation, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Harrahs Cherokee Casinos, Cherokee Central Schools, and Harrahs Scholarship Fund.

Kananesgi is the Cherokee word for spider. In the Cherokee culture, the spider represents creativity and dexterity. Traditionally, some Cherokees even pass their babies’ hands through cobwebs to instill this creativity in their children.
