North Bay students collect more than 500 prom dresses, then open a store to give them away. – NBC Bay Area

A year ago at The Village at Corte Madera shopping center, Redwood High School senior Olivia Vilanova was preparing to open Student Leadership Group's first-ever prom boutique.

Hundreds of prom dresses were collected over the months. There were a variety of colors, styles, and sizes, but all with the same price: free.

Vilanova, however, feared that the news would not get out and that no one would come forward. She saw a line of people waiting outside, but assumed they were heading to the nearby Apple Store.

Then she opened the door.

As soon as we opened our doors, tons of people, like at least 50 people, rushed through the doors to buy a dress, Villanova said. So it was a very special moment because it really made us feel like what we were doing was very necessary and appreciated.

Charlotte Lacy, a sophomore at Redwood High, joined the effort this spring after hearing about the success of the boutiques last year. Aware of the growing demand, she knew they would need even more dresses.

We've been working on this for at least six months and have spent about six hours a week putting this together, Lacy said.

The team gathered donations of purses, jewelry and more than 500 dresses from the community and sponsors. Lacy and Villanova, both preparing for prom, understand how expensive prom dresses can be.

I feel like sometimes Marin is considered very rich, and even if that is the case, there are also families that can't afford prom, so just help these families.

The students' goal is to eliminate financial barriers and ensure that everyone can participate in the unique prom experience.

Anyone can go, enjoy it and feel confident in what they wear, Lacy said.

The Prom boutique at the Village at Corte Madera is open Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30.
