“I brought up my humanitarian experience, with the aim of starting an initiative that could help local women find appropriate clothing solutions, while also helping them combat period poverty,” she explains. “Through my experience in a previous NGO, we have seen first-hand how women and girls in times of crisis, being the most vulnerable, are disproportionately affected. During these times, they often reduce their consumption of menstrual hygiene products to save money, resorting to unhygienic methods such as using whatever cloth is available.

I recently hired two Syrian women who learned how to make reusable clothing and sanitary pads. We launched this dual initiative last year, in partnership with a local seamstress from the poor Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood in Tripoli. However, this collaboration proved unsustainable. Doing everything in the new workspace above the boutique we opened is proving to be an effective solution.

“I applied to EMDAD and received a loan, which made it easier to open our physical store,” Allouche explains. “We rented a space, decorated it to our taste, bought sewing machines, and began market research for our inaugural collection. We started with a winter collection followed by another for Ramadan.”

Alongside our first collection, we have developed our first reusable sanitary napkin kits, which will be distributed free of charge in partnership with a local NGO, explains Allouche. Our reusable sanitary napkins are made from fabric scraps, cotton and blackout fabric, the latter two coming from suppliers that meet strict hygiene standards to ensure leak prevention.
