Runway Style Tips: How to Wear the Inside-Out Shirt Trend

July can be a sleepy month in the fashion world, and even in American politics. So we thought it would be the perfect time to survey some of our favorite runway trends from the past year, focusing on the ones that were style-driven rather than a new clothing silhouette. We wanted to be able to try it out with pieces that already exist in our closets; no clothes to call for and no purchases allowed. We settled on five key styling tricks: double polos, sheer anything, aprons, skirts over pants, and the inside-out shirt, which we're covering today.

As with The Rows' oft-discussed towel-around-your-neck style, we wanted to know: Can we pull off these trends in real life? Or is their appeal simply because they're on the runway? And like everyone else with friends, we often text each other while getting dressed; it's especially fun to experiment when someone is as involved in the experience as you are.

The first stop on our style journey is the inside-out button-down shirt trend, which we’ve been quietly obsessed with since Dries Van Notens’ fall ’24 runway. On the surface, it’s simple: Take a shirt and put it on inside out. But as we soon discovered, not all shirts are created equal.

Jose Criales-Unzueta: Here is my first attempt. I love this Christopher John Rogers shirt because it is very lightweight, so I thought it would work well for this. I paired it with a skirt to keep the silhouette easy.

Laia Garcia-Furtado: The CJR shirt and skirt give off a real summery, breezy vibe. Did you button your shirt all the way up? I realized it made a big difference in the fit of the shirt.

Criales-Unzueta: Sure, yes. I buttoned it all the way up at first, and it didn't work, it was a bit too much.Buttoned. (Sorry!!)

Garcia-Furtado: Lmaoooo.

Criales-Unzueta: I did two undoes to give the shoulders some action. The collar is also very flimsy, which works. It should also be said that I didn't have anyone to help me with the buttons, which added a layer of difficulty here.

Garcia-Furtado: Yeah, I only buttoned the first two buttons, mostly because I feel like we're not supposed to do all the buttons, like we're suddenly in a weird clown costume. For my first attempt, I actually layered two shirts, which we're also going to wear later this week. One is a sheer beige Maria McManus shirt that I had a bit of a laundry issue with and now has weird stains, but I didn't want to just give up on it. Then a Collina Strada shirt on top. I think this is the perfect combination because I love the Collina shirt, but I've been struggling to figure out how to wear it to the office without it being so sheer, so this was my solution. I tried leaving it out of the pants, but it felt a little too messy.
