Dave Portnoy arrived at the White House.

In photos released Thursday night, the Boston-raised media mogul can be seen interviewing President Trump in a segment yet to be broadcast for Barstool Sports. It has yet to be aired, but appears to be linked to MLB’s return this week and, according to a White House staff member who tweeted about it, involves a discussion of the role sport plays in the #GreatAmericanComeback.

Dave Portnoys has come a long way from his early days in Boston, where he first started a sports-focused newspaper in 2003, and ultimately transformed it into what is arguably the most important media for the culture of brothers in the country. Barstool, who is now based in New York and owns some of the most popular podcasts in the world, brought him a wealthy business this year valued at $ 450 million and won him many enemies, as well as an army of supporters who would follow him. on a cliff in Nantucket if he led them there.

Like it or not, the point is the guy has made himself impossible to ignore, and allying with him, as the president presumably is trying to do, means reaching the thousands of fans who live, breathe, and publish. incessantly about any Barstool, and whose devotion to Portnoy is unconditional, surviving multiple controversies including, most recently, a public argument with Barstool’s talent over clips of Portnoys past racist comments on Colin Kaepernick, and the use of racial slurs.

As his profile has steadily grown, Portnoy has become a known entity in right-wing media, appearing several times on one of Trump’s favorite shows, Tucker Carlson Tonight. His takes were also amplified by retweets from the Trump family, including the President himself, who in May released a video Portnoy shared about a Boston business owner opposing mandatory closures in the pandemic.

So it makes sense that Portnoys’ journey eventually leads him to the White House, where he was pictured chatting, questioning, and laughing with the Commander-in-Chief.

The president turned to Portnoy in a time of need. At this point in his re-election campaign, Trump appears to be behind Joe Biden in the polls and faces widespread disapproval of his handling of the coronavirus outbreak. Trump was also mocked for his performance in an interview on Sunday on the White Houses South Lawn with Foxes Chris Wallace, particularly over the fake coronavirus numbers and the hilarious bragging about having passed a test designed to detect signs of dementia. . In the wake of all this negative attention, Trump held at least one more interview in the same location, with a sympathetic Fox analyst, who nodded as Trump worked to explain his claims about the proven non-difficult test. It seems that Portnoy is next in this line of interviewees.

Portnoy’s politics are a little murky, and it’s not like he’s a full-fledged campaign surrogate for Trump, but he did say in a 2016 blog post that he was voting for him: I m ‘don’t care if it’s a joke. I don’t care if he’s racist. I don’t care if he’s sexist. I don’t care. I hope he stays in the race and I hope he wins. Why? Because I love that he makes other politicians squirm. I love that he says shit that no one else will say, even if it’s ridiculous. It’s unclear whether Portnoy sees his appearance with Trump this week as a way to improve presidents’ prospects in November. In a tweet on Friday, Portnoy had just this to say: I have a hard and fast rule that I live, he tweeted. If a sitting President of the United States invites me to the Oval Office, I will.
