Jokowi and Prabowo Bond, PDI-P and PKB ministers absent from Ramadan Cabinet gathering
Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Vice President Ma'ruf Amin on Thursday invited Indonesian Cabinet ministers to break the fast (iftar) at the State Palace.
Jokowi sat at the same table with Ma'ruf Amin, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, Chief Minister of Economy Airlangga Hartarto and Chief Minister of Security Hadi Tjahjanto. Meanwhile, several ministers from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the National Awakening Party (PKB) were unable to attend.
Minister of Communication and Information Technology Budi Arie Setiadi clarified that it was acceptable for Prabowo to sit at the same table as the president and vice president, since he is now the president-elect. “Well, it doesn't matter, he's already the president-elect. Why wouldn't that be allowed? It's allowed since he's already elected,” Budi Arie said.
Budi explained that Jokowi and Prabowo did not discuss the transition to the new government for 2024-2029. Prabowo is expected to be sworn in as Indonesia's new president in October after winning the 2024 presidential election with 58% of the vote.
Meanwhile, several ministers were observed absent from the iftar, including ministers from the PDI-P, such as Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini and Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly.
Relations between the PDI-P and Jokowi deteriorated after Jokowi's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, was nominated as Prabowo Subianto's running mate, against PDI-P-backed candidate Ganjar Pranowo.
Additionally, several PKB ministers were absent from the iftar, including Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah and Minister of Village Development, Disadvantaged Regions and Minister of Transmigration Abdul Halim Iskandar.
PKB supported Muhaimin Iskandar as the running mate of Anies Baswedan, who competed with Prabowo and Gibran.
Additionally, several other ministers who were observed absent from the iftar at the palace included Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Minister of Education, of Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Makarim and the head of Cultural Affairs. Minister Muhadjir Effendy.
“(The ministers who were not present) have responsibilities in the regions and abroad,” Budi said after the event.
When asked if some absent ministers had asked Jokowi for permission, he then asked journalists not to dramatize the situation.
“I think so. Let's not dramatize things, whether they come or not,” he said.
The iftar event began with the recitation of Quranic verses and was followed by a sermon by Ma'ruf Amin. After Ma'ruf Amin's sermon, the event continued with a sermon and collective prayer led by Kyai of Ora Aji Jogja Islamic School, Gus Miftah.
