Trump's secret trial begins Monday morning with jury selection

PALM BEACH, Florida. Former President Donald Trump is set to make history as his criminal trial on hush money charges begins Monday. He is the first former president to be tried on criminal charges as his hush money case opens Monday with jury selection.

The indictment includes 34 counts, including 11 invoices from Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, and dozens of allegedly false business records.

It has to do with more than $400,000 Cohen received in reimbursement during Trump's first year in office and with alleged secret payments made to Stormy Daniels to deny allegations of an affair during the 2016 election.

The alleged hush money payments were listed in Trump's ledger as a “legal retainer,” which prosecutors say was done to hide these expenses.

“If he makes the judge crazy enough, if he's wild enough in his antics in the courtroom or in the way he presents himself if he were to testify in this case, if he's particularly indignant, a judge has some leeway after a conviction like this to order a certain amount of prison time,” said Andrew Cherkasky, a former federal prosecutor.
