CLEAR WATER (WQOW) – Hundreds of table tennis games were played this weekend at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's McPhee Center for the National College Table Tennis championship.
The women's and men's singles championships were decided on Sunday.
On the women's side, Angie Tan of UCLA competed against Zhen Deng of Texas Wesleyan.
Deng took the win with four sets to nil.
“I'm very happy because this is my last national, so with the three champions,” Deng said. “I'm very excited about this.”
She said she couldn't have done this without her team.
“We have been preparing for this for a long time, and this year our team has trained very hard, and now my coaches and my teammates are supporting me, and that is very good,” Deng said.
In the men's championship match, Nikhil Kumar played against Ved Sheth, both from the University of California-Berkley.
Kumar took the win despite a busy travel schedule.
“It feels great, I'm happy with the performance I put in this weekend, I've also done quite a few long journeys from Europe,” said Kumar. “I'm happy to come out with the win this weekend and also defend my title from last year.”
Kumar still has a number of big table tennis matches ahead of him.
“In about a month, May 14, I have to go to Peru for the Olympic singles qualifications,” Kumar said. “They have 32 players there, four of whom qualify. So it's countries from both North and South America, so it's a very strong competition. I'm looking forward to the next month of preparation and playing there as best I can.” .”
