OJK blocks 5,000 bank accounts linked to online gambling as Jokowi prepares task force
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Financial Services Authority (FSA) blocked 5,000 bank accounts suspected of being involved in online game. The action has been carried out since the end of last year until March 2024.
Chairman of the OJK Board of Commissioners Mahendra Siregar stressed that accounts related to online gambling will remain blocked until there is legal certainty.
“If we receive a list of accounts suspected of being used or used in online gaming activities, we block them immediately,” said Mahendra after a meeting with President Joko Widodo or Jokowi on Thursday.
Mahendra explained that online gambling turnover sometimes occurs across borders. This means that it was broadcast outside the country. “A few bank accounts need to be studied and investigated, especially in cases of overbooking,” he said.
On the same occasion, Minister of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi revealed that the turnover of online gambling money in Indonesia reached Rp. 327 trillion as of long 2023, based on data from the Financial Transactions Reporting and Analysis Center (PPATK).
Budi Arie considers that the turnover of online gambling is enormous. The government will create an integrated task force this week to crack down on online gambling. “Mr President (Jokowi) explained at the beginning that there were complaints from the public. The citizens are playing again,” remarked Budi Arie.
A number of ministries and institutions such as the police, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics and the OJK will be involved in this task force. This task force will eventually be led by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto.
In cracking down on online gambling, Kominfo cut off access and removed associated content. Preventive measures are taken by analyzing the latest methods of spreading online gambling, including the insertion of links to online gambling sites and content in government sites.
