Imran Khan runs for Oxford presidency from prison

LONDON (Diya TV) – Former Pakistani prime minister and cricket legend Imran Khan is considering running for the position of chancellor of Oxford University from his prison cell in Pakistan, his team has told The Telegraph. Despite serving a 10-year prison sentence, Khan will take part in an online vote for the prestigious post.

The position of chancellor of the University of Oxford is now vacant after Lord Patten, the 80-year-old former governor of Hong Kong and chairman of the Conservative Party, resigned after 21 years in office. For the first time, Oxford will hold the election online, moving away from the traditional in-person vote that required graduates to dress in full academic attire. Typically, university graduates, often politicians, serve as chancellors.

Khan, currently jailed for inciting protests against the Pakistani military on May 9, denies the charges. He studied economics and politics at Keble College, Oxford, in 1972 and captained the university's cricket team. From 2005 to 2014, Khan was chancellor of the University of Bradford.

“Imran Khan is going to run for the position of chancellor of Oxford University because of public demand,” Syed Zulfi Bukhari, Khan’s international media adviser, told the Telegraph. “We will announce it publicly once we get Khan’s nod and start the signature campaign.”

Despite his popularity, Khan faces stiff competition from former prime ministers Sir Tony Blair and Boris Johnson, making his victory unlikely.

Since his ouster from power in 2022 in a military-backed no-confidence vote, Pakistani authorities have filed more than 150 complaints against Khan, including for inciting violence. In one recent case, a Pakistani court overturned the conviction and seven-year prison sentences of Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, over the legality of their 2018 marriage. However, authorities quickly filed new complaints to keep him in prison.

On Tuesday, more than two dozen MPs called for Khan’s immediate release at a House of Lords committee hearing, which focused on the erosion of democratic standards in Pakistan and Khan’s “unlawful incarceration”. The hearing was called by Bradford West Labour MP Naz Shah and his Conservative counterpart Lord Hannan of Kingsclere.

PTI reported that Pakistani dissident Azhar Mashwani, a close aide of Khan living in the UK, received threats that his parents would be kidnapped if he attended the House of Lords event. Mashwani was scheduled to speak on Tuesday.

Since Khan's imprisonment in August 2023, which the UN described as having no legal basis, hundreds of his supporters have been arrested and the government has indicated its intention to ban his party, the PTI.

The role of the Chancellor of the University of Oxford is largely ceremonial. According to the university, the Chancellor is usually a prominent public figure elected for life and presides over major ceremonies.
