Adiala Jail Superintendent Denies PTI Claims That Imran Khan's Facilities Were Removed

RAWALPINDI: The Adiala Jail administration on Friday refuted allegations that facilities of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan were removed from the jail as the party claimed that the founder was facing difficulties due to inadequate facilities.

Khan had access to all facilities listed in the prison manual, with special attention paid to his security and health, according to the superintendent of Rawalpindi Central Jail, also known as Adiala Jail.

“Every day, an English newspaper is sent to the PTI founder. To stay fit, he is provided with a place to walk and an exercise machine,” he noted.

The prison official added that the former prime minister and his incarcerated wife, Bushra Bibi, had been allocated a separate kitchen, while prison staff were present 24/7 for their security.

The Adiala jail superintendent said that books were also available for him to read.

The official denied reports of an open sewer in Khan's cell and rats in Bushra Bibis' cell, saying: “There is no truth in the reports of an open sewer in Khan's cell or rats in Bushra.”

The official said the PTI founder was allowed to meet his family, lawyers and hold political meetings twice a week. On the occasion of the hearings, the PTI founder also met the people who attended the hearings in jail, he added.

The prison official said Khan also had a television in his cell.

The jail's stance comes after PTI Senator Muhammad Ali Khan Saif relayed media reports about a range of “facilities” his leader is deprived of. The senator said he had visited Khan in the jail and found that he was facing adversities there.

The PTI founder was not given the same facilities as President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during their respective prison terms, he said.

The PTI founder suffers from ear pain. He does not have an electric toothbrush or dumbbells for exercise, he said.

Saif said the former prime minister was also not allowed to speak to his sons over the phone.

He conveyed the sentiments of the workers to the PTI chief, saying they were disheartened after the August 22 public rally was abruptly postponed.

The PTI founder asked him to bring together the party leaders to resolve the grievances, he said.
