PM Modi in Maharashtra over statue collapse
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today apologised to Chhatrapati Shivaji and all those injured after the statue of the legendary leader collapsed at Rajkot Fort, eight months after its inauguration.
“As soon as I came here, I first apologised to Shivaji for the collapse of the statue. I also apologise to the people who were injured in the collapse,” Prime Minister Modi said in Palghar, Maharashtra.
“Those who consider Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as their deity and have been deeply hurt, I bow down and apologise to them. Our values are different. For us, nothing is greater than our divinity,” he added.
A 35-feet-tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the state's Sindhudurg district collapsed on August 26. The statue was meant to honour the legacy of the Marathi Navy and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in maritime defence and security, and its historical link with the modern Indian Navy.
The public works body PWD said the rusty nuts and bolts posed a risk to the stability of the statue, but the warnings were ignored, critics say.
The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance has accused the ruling government of corruption in the statue construction case and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Amid a raging controversy, Eknath Shinde on Thursday said he is ready to lay his head on the feet of the Marathi warrior and apologise 100 times.
The Prime Minister also took a swipe at the opposition for “insulting and mistreating the son of the country” Veer Savarkar.
“Our values are different, we are not those people who continue to abuse and insult the great son of Mother India, the son of this land, Veer Savarkar. They are not ready to apologise, they are ready to go to court and fight,” he added, indirectly attacking Rahul Gandhi.
Mr Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, is fighting a criminal defamation complaint filed by VD Savarkar's grandson Satyaki Savarkar. The Congress leader is accused of making false allegations against the Hindu ideologue during his speech in London.
