Shivaji statue collapses in Maharashtra PM Modi apologizes, says Shivaji is our deity
Calling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj a “deity”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday apologised to the revered 17th century warrior king and all those who were offended by the collapse of his statue at Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg. The collapse of the 33-foot-tall statue, unveiled by Prime Minister Modi only eight months ago, has embarrassed the ruling Mahayuti government ahead of the general elections.
Speaking at an event in Palghar, Prime Minister Modi said, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name or a king. For us, he is our deity. Today, I bow at his feet and apologise to my deity.”
Prime Minister Modi's apology comes amid outrage in Maharashtra over the incident as Shivaji Maharaj is a revered figure and his legacy is a sensitive issue in the state.
“Our values are different. For us, nothing is greater than our divinity… As soon as I came here, I first apologised to Shivaji Maharaj for the collapse of the statue. I also apologise to the people who were injured in the collapse,” the prime minister said as the government tries to contain the damage ahead of the general elections.
Hitting out at the opposition, which has been trying to corner the coalition government on the issue, Prime Minister Modi said: “Some people continue to insult Veer Savarkar but are not ready to apologise for insulting him.
What has compounded the problems of the ruling alliance, comprising the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and the BJP, is the fact that they have been speaking with different voices.
The Shinde government also faced protests from its own ally NCP (Ajit Pawar) over the statue collapse incident.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday also asserted that he would not hesitate to touch the feet of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj 100 times and apologise for the collapse of the statue if necessary.
A 35-foot-tall statue of Maratha empire founder Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year at a fort in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district, collapsed on August 26. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde blamed strong winds for the collapse of the statue.
The statue was erected at Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg, which witnessed heavy rains and strong winds last week.
At the event held in Palghar, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone of Vadhvan Port. The total cost of this project is around Rs 76,000 crore.
“It will not only be the port of India, but the port of the entire world in terms of depth. Let me tell you that Vadhvan port alone will have the capacity to carry more containers than any other port in the country,” PM Modi said after laying the foundation stone.
“I would like to congratulate the people of Palghar and the entire country. Recently, we have also given permission for Dighi port. This is double good news for the people of Maharashtra,” he added.
“This project alone is expected to generate an investment of several lakhs of rupees. Around 1.2 million jobs will be created. Who is against this development of Maharashtra? Who are these people who do not want the youth of Maharashtra to get jobs?” PM Modi said in a veiled dig at the opposition in Maharashtra.
The Prime Minister also stressed that the voters of Maharashtra should not forget “those people” who want to keep Maharashtra behind them.
Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 218 fisheries projects worth around Rs 1,560 crore.
