No place for defectors in PTI, Imran Khan promises

Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has announced a policy for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) defectors, saying there is no room for those who left the party during difficult times.

“I want to make it clear that there is no place for those who abandoned the party during difficult times,” the PTI founder said while addressing reporters at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Refusing to name anyone, the founder of the embattled party said he knew who had abandoned the party in difficult times. “Those who were active in good times but left the party in difficult times have no place in the party,” he added.

However, the ousted prime minister said, those who endured violence, which he said included torture of their families and blackmail in difficult times, but did not leave the party, should be reassured.

Following the violent protests of May 9, 2023, several PTI leaders, including party brass, parted ways with Khan, while several others were arrested by authorities for their alleged involvement in the chaos.

The May 9 incidents refer to violent protests that erupted in many parts of the country following Khan's arrest in a corruption case.

The violent protests saw attacks on state property, including military installations, with civil and military authorities vowing to try rioters under the Army Act.

A few months later and before the February 8 elections, there were reports of some defectors wanting to rejoin the party ranks, but the PTI leadership categorically denied taking anyone back.

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry, who is also a staunch critic of the current PTI leadership, notably expressed a desire to join the party fold, which was rejected by the party's central committee.

The PTI central committee strongly condemns the politicians who parted ways during this difficult period, a resolution read, adding that these politicians have no moral right or authority to comment on party affairs.

Imran's former aide announced on May 24 last year that he was taking a break from politics and parting ways with the PTI following the chaos of May 9, when party workers and supporters reportedly attacked public and military installations almost across the country immediately after the PTI founder's arrest.

A group of disgruntled PTI leaders also formed a separate political party, the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), led by Jahangir Tareen.

The 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been in jail for over a year after being charged in multiple cases including the Toshakhana case, the cipher case and the un-Islamic marriage case.

Despite getting relief in several cases, the PTI founder remains behind bars after being booked in the new Toshakhana case and other cases related to the May 9 chaos.
