The Real Story Behind the Feud Between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

The Real Story Behind the Feud Between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

In an election where neither party agrees on much, they do agree on one thing: The first presidential debate of the year was a disaster for President Joe Biden, who was ousted as his party's presumptive nominee as a direct result.

As the Sept. 10 debate on ABC approaches, it's no surprise that Team Trump wants to keep the terms of the June debate intact and that Vice President Kamala Harris' team does not.

This leads to the latest argument that has been going on for days over microphones, a subject that has proven to be the most delicate of all. The question is whether candidates' microphones should be cut off when it is not their turn to speak.

Republicans want them silenced, Democrats don't.

Each team got a chance to see what the situation looked like with the microphones off. Democrats say Trump appeared more docile last month when he wasn’t allowed to intervene whenever he wanted, giving him a false appearance of discipline. Republicans accuse Harris of being afraid of the silence Trump’s microphone cutoff would cause.

Harris is a very different candidate from Biden. She is a veteran prosecutor whose questioning of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh during his Senate confirmation hearings was frequently highlighted at the Democratic National Convention. She has her own strategic reasons for wanting to take on Trump in all his glory, according to campaign sources and Democratic allies.

She doesn’t just want America to see Donald Trump unvarnished on the microphone; she wants to show America that she can stand up to him and take whatever he throws at her, said Mary Anne Marsh, a Democratic strategist. Voters always want to see that. When you stand up to other people, it means you stand up to them. That’s a crucial test, especially as a woman running for president.

Within Harris’ campaign, there is a belief that there should be no guardrails and that viewers should see a Trump unleashed. Campaign officials say Trump’s advisers don’t trust their own candidate and accuse Trump of having trouble staying on track with his arguments, despite all the talk of Biden’s cognitive decline. Showing him unleashed would only benefit Harris.

They also point to Trump's apparent willingness to accept live microphones.

“We agreed to the same rules. I don't know, I don't care,” Trump said this week. The agreement said it would be the same as last time. In that case, the sound was muted.

Yet even Harris officials and allies agreed that, ultimately, the muted microphones hurt Biden during the debate. Without Trump’s interventions, there was only silence when it was Biden’s turn to speak. It put him on the spot and exposed his inability, at times, to finish a sentence.

Trump campaign advisers feel the muted microphones contributed to his strong performance, as he did not interrupt Biden or ramble as he has in the past.

The Trump campaign accuses Harris' team of using the microphone disagreement as a possible excuse to walk away from the debate if necessary, especially if Thursday night's CNN interview goes poorly.

Trump senior adviser Danielle Alvarez highlighted what she said were other demands from the Harris campaign.

“It’s very concerning that she asked to bring notes. I guess she’s not very sure of her own ‘values.’ And it’s equally concerning that she asked to be seated, even though Biden managed to hang on to the podium and stand for 90 minutes,” Alvarez said Thursday. I guess that’s not surprising given that she needed Walz to watch her during her CNN interview. What’s clear is that she’s weak and doesn’t deserve the promotion she’s seeking.

A Harris campaign official said the claim that Harris wanted notes and asked to sit down was categorically false.

Scott Howell, a veteran Republican who has a history of helping Republican Senate candidates prepare for debates, said having hot mics may have helped Biden in 2020.

It gave him an opportunity to have an opening for some good lines,” Howell said.

He highlighted one of Biden's worst moments last month, when he appeared to lose his train of thought while talking about border patrols.

Trump responded: “I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don't think he knows what he said either.”

The hot-mic debate is one in which neither side has really clean hands. It was Trump’s team in 2020 that came out against muting his microphone, saying it was completely unacceptable for anyone to wield such power. And it was Democrats, albeit under the Biden administration, who just months ago wanted the microphones muted in the first place.

At the time, Biden’s campaign claimed that Trump’s repeated interruptions in 2020 were distracting and that he was unable to follow the rules. It was true. By one count, Trump interrupted Biden 145 times.

But at times, that seemed to save Biden, who struggled to keep his train of thought in some answers. But Biden’s pauses were overshadowed by Trump, who spoke at the same time as him. Add to that the moderators’ reprimands of Trump for flouting the rules, and the script shifted sharply toward Trump and chaos.

Karen Finney, who helped strategize Hillary Clinton's 2016 debate against Trump, predicted that an unmuted microphone could prove disastrous for Trump if he launches into a personal attack that could turn off women and people of color.

“I think his team knows that Harris is getting him all worked up, which is going to push him to reveal his true colors,” Finney said. “Having been through this before, people should be able to hear exactly what he’s saying. This is about two leaders and assessing their character.”
