Did the arrest of the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu been the straw that broke the back of the camel? This weekend, there were mass demonstrations in Türkiye with millions of people showing their anger at the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“We are not only fighting for Ekrem, but for Turkey,” said Dilek Imamoglu, wife of the opposition politician imprisoned, with tears in the eyes.

“We must give ourselves, we are a large family of 86 million people. Justice cannot be imprisoned.”

Unbearable economic situation

A demonstrator of the elderly underlined the economic crisis: “People of different social classes are going on the street. An important reason is also the empty pot on the stove in the kitchen.”

The economic situation has become unbearable for many throughout Turkey. The country has experienced an economic crisis for several years now. The population suffers from an increase in inflation and high rents.

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the annual inflation rate was 42% in January of this year. In addition, there is a depreciation of the Turkish LIRA. Many elderly and retired people can no longer afford the apartments in which they live.

Nearly 2,000 arrests

The rally on Saturday had been called by the Party of the Opposition Party CHP (Popular Republican Party) of which Imamoglu is a member. The demonstrators accused Erdogan of trying to politically eliminate imamoglu through the judiciary.

Since the start of the demonstrations after the detention of Imamoglu on March 23, a total of 1,900 people have been arrested according to the Turkish Interior Ministry, mainly students. Journalists have also been detained, notably the Swedish journalist Kaj Joakim Medin of the Daegens daily, etc., who wanted to report on the demonstrations in Istanbul. Earlier, the BBC correspondent Mark Lowen had also been detained.

“This fight is for Turkey,” said CHP chief Ozgr Ozel, at Rally, who, according to him, has attracted more than two million people. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had however described demonstrators as “marginal groups”.

National anthem to report the unit

Despite the end of Ramadan, people flock to protest. “I am 85 years old and I have never experienced such oppression,” said a woman in DW. “I am here for the Republic, for Atatrk, for the peace of the people, to improve our time and escape poverty.”

By singing the Turkish national anthem, the demonstrators wanted to report their unit. In addition to Turkish flags and CHP banners, there were also flags to support political parties, unions and civil society organizations. University students, retirees, workers, teachers and even civil servants participated.

“We are treated unfairly,” a 17 -year -old student joined DW DW who joined the rally with his father and other relatives. “Our future is removed, our youth is gone. That is why I am here.”

Other political parties also participated in the demonstrations, including the Pro-Kurdish party DEM. “We are fighting for the freedom of Ekrem Imamoglu, Selahattin Demirtas, Figen Yuksekdag and all political prisoners,” said one of its members in DW. “We are fighting for the freedom of imprisoned students.”

One thing seems certain: mass demonstrations in Türkiye make 2025 a historic year. Some 22 years after Erdogan took office as Turkish Prime Minister in 2003, the struggle for democracy and the rule of law in the country again broke out.
