Pakistan calls for lifting sanctions against Iran
Pakistan on Friday urged the international community, including the United States, to lift long-standing economic sanctions against Iran to allow it to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
In a Twitter article, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi called for the lifting of sanctions on human grounds so that he can “use his resources to save precious human lives”.
“The entire world community is facing an unprecedented pandemic. We must, as leaders, at a time of great challenges and great difficulty, show that the toughest sanctions must be lifted against Iran, at this time of peril, so that he can use his resources to save precious human lives, “he said.
His statement follows Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan asking him to play a role in helping lift the harsh sanctions that Tehran says severely hampered his fight against the coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19.
Speaking to the Anadolu agency, Aisha Farooqui, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that Islamabad had received the letter and was evaluating it.
Among the countries most affected by the new coronavirus, the death toll in Iran has risen to 1,433, public television reported on Friday.
Vice Minister of Health Alireza Reisi said on television that another 149 people had died from the virus in the past 24 hours.
With 1,237 new cases in a day, the total number of confirmed cases reached 19,644, he added.
A total of 6,745 people were released from hospitals after recovering from the virus, the official added.
The coronavirus appeared in Wuhan, China last December and has spread to at least 163 countries and territories. The World Health Organization has declared the epidemic a pandemic.
The number of confirmed cases worldwide now exceeds 247,400, while the death toll exceeds 10,000 and more than 86,000 have recovered, according to data compiled by the American Johns Hopkins University.
