A new CNN poll released Tuesday finds that 70% of Americans disapprove of how President Donald Trump is handling the economy.

Notably, Trump never reached a 50% disapproval rating for the economy during his entire first term, according to CNN. Tuesday’s poll found that 77 percent of respondents, including a majority of Republicans, said the president’s policies had increased the cost of living in their community.

The poll was conducted by Social Science Research Solutions, a survey and market research company, and measured a random sample of 1,499 adults from April 30 to May 4.

The economy and cost of living are clearly an important issue: 55 percent of respondents reported it as their most important concern. This share is more than double that of any other issue, with the state of democracy being the second largest issue at 19 percent.

So, to craft policies that materially benefit Americans, many surveys suggest that government officials should focus on affordability. But public opinion is evenly divided on which political party would be best able to manage the economy, according to Tuesday’s CNN poll.

Three-quarters of respondents believe that the American economy unfairly favors the desires of the elite. Conversely, nearly half of those surveyed said the government was providing aid to too many people “who don’t deserve it,” almost 10 percentage points more than those who said the government was not helping enough people.

But there could be an opportunity for Democrats as the midterm elections approach. If the votes really matter, of course.
