George Speight, who was sentenced to death for his role in the May 2000 coup, has made it clear that he was responsible for much of the suffering in the country.

Speight’s death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

In his presentation today to the Constitutional Review Commission, Speight said the first step is recognizing that a wrong has been committed and that the immunity chapter of the 2013 Constitution confirms that those who drafted it knew they had committed a grave wrong.

Speight supported the RFMF commander’s proposal to remove immunity provisions from the 2013 Constitution, saying it would be the starting point for change.

He says he is grateful to the RFMF commander for making this presentation and that he did not expect it to come from the army.

He further claims that the 2013 Constitution is unjust and unjust, and that the immunity provisions are a recipe for disaster.

Speight says the 2013 Constitution is a stumbling block.

He adds that although the document contains some good clauses, these are outweighed by the bad ones.

Speight argues that the Constitution must have the trust of the majority of people it governs.

He also stressed that he accepted responsibility for his actions and paid for them with his imprisonment.

He says he chose not to appear before the Commission.

Speaking to fijivillage News after his presentation, Speight said he was ready to participate in the process of solving the country’s problems.

He says he is grateful for the opportunity to share his views on the 2013 Constitution and that he is also grateful that a door has opened to begin reconciliation.

He further says that everyone wants to move forward so that Fiji can prosper, and he is ready to be part of that change.
