Tennis: Soderling says fearless after a nine-year battle
REUTERS: Former world number four Robin Soderling says he has survived a nine-year battle with anxiety and panic attacks and called for greater attention to athletes’ mental health.
Runner-up at the French Open twice, Soderling was stricken with glandular fever after winning the Swedish Open at Bastad in July 2011 and did not play again, retiring four years later.
The Swede said he has also suffered from mental health issues since 2011 and has finally overcome this year.
“I’m happy and happy to have come out on the other side … Like me, most professional athletes are high-performing perfectionists who dedicate their lives to their sport,” the 35-year-old wrote on Instagram.
“Being an athlete can be a huge challenge for your mental health, and for me, my own striving for perfection and the constant pressure I put on myself was almost fatal.
“… Pressuring yourself and working really hard can be very rewarding. But if you cross that thin line – if you don’t listen to your body and give it time to recharge and recover, it can ruin your career , and your life. “
Soderling said it was time to tackle the problem among professional athletes.
“Data show that up to one in three top athletes suffer from mental health problems that can manifest as stress, eating disorders, burnout, depression and anxiety,” he wrote.
“We need to start talking about it and make sure that the next generation of athletes will be better prepared than I am.”
The men’s tour has joined Sporting Chance and Headspace to help players and staff deal with mental health issues and ensure their well-being during the COVID-19 shutdown.
