Quebec and Ontario won singles gold at the 2023 Canada Games
The table tennis event concluded on Friday, February 24 at the PEI Convention Center during the Canada Games 2023, which will take place from February 18 to March 5 in Prince Edward Island. Table tennis will be part of the first week of the 2023 Canada Games. It was with the highly anticipated singles event that the competition ended. Quebec and Ontario tied for the titles, with Quebec taking the boys’ title and Ontario taking the girls’ title. It should be noted that the 2 finals were against table tennis players from the same province.
Jessie Xu, (1st seed) won 3-0 against her compatriot Demi Cai who finished 2nd in the tournament. A great achievement for her as it was her fourth medal, including 3 golds and a silver for the player from Oakville, Ontario. The only gold medal that eluded her at these Games is mixed doubles (silver with Kevin Guo). 3rd place went to Sofia Li (7e seed) from British Columbia who caused the surprise by climbing into the competition for 3rd position. The British Columbian narrowly defeated Alice Provencher (3ed seed) from Quebec. The two players played a spectacular game in front of the crowd who came to cheer. In the end, Li won in 5 tight sets with a score of 12-10 in the final set.
The male final went up against 2 players from Quebec who were also the 2 favorites of the tournament. In the end, Simon Martin beat Joakim Desmeules in 4 hard-fought rounds. Desmeules started the match strongly and attacked every ball from his opponent, winning the first set 11-6. Martin had to step up his game in the next 3 sets to win the match 12-10, 13-11, 11-4. After the race, Martin told us that despite Desmeules’ strong start, he remained confident. Martin, calm and composed as usual, explains that “it’s not over until all 3 rounds are over”. Wise words. Martin finished his 2023 Canada Games brilliantly after winning gold in all the events he competed in: men’s singles, mixed doubles (Alice Provencher), men’s doubles (Joakim Desmeules) and the men’s team event (Joakim Desmeules).
The bronze medal game was between Jordan Grewal and Kevin Guo, both from Ontario. It was a 3-set win for Guo. Thus, he added this bronze medal to the 3 silver medals previously won at the Games.
