Former Zimbabwean cricketer Guy Whittall has managed to cheat death again, this time he and his dog fought a leopard, leaving him bloodied and requiring emergency surgery.
In September 2013, Whittall had gone to sleep and woke up to an admirably well-behaved 8-foot crocodile sleeping under his bed at home. Reports indicated that Whittall had slept all night with his legs dangling from the bed.
Reports from his native Zimbabwe this time said the 51-year-old was attacked while passing through the nature reserve he manages in the country's Humani region. They added that he was fortunate to be accompanied by his faithful dog Chikara, who was also bitten while trying to save Whittall.
Whittall's wife provided more details about the encounter on her Facebook account a few days ago.
“…The guy came in earlier today with a wounded leopard. We are very fortunate that he was stabilized by great staff at Hippo Clinic. He was then flown by ambulance from Buffalo Range to Harare and then transferred to Milton Park Hospital for treatment. He is currently awaiting surgery tomorrow morning as he lost a lot of blood today,” she wrote.
She also credited Chikara with saving Whittall's life.
“Our faithful K9 Chikara, his handler and trackers. Chikara is going to the vet tomorrow after being mauled by the leopard and getting Guy's cat! Very special boy,” she wrote.
As a cricketer, Whittall was known for two moments: it was his century against Pakistan in Harare that had helped Zimbabwe record their first-ever Test victory in 1995. However, in that Test his unbeaten innings of 113 was overshadowed by Grant Flower (unbeaten 201 runs) and Andy Flower (156 runs) as Zimbabwe won by one innings and 64 runs.
Whittal also famously scored a Test double ton against New Zealand, with 203 runs in Bulawayo.
