Young women become empowered from the start Dress for Success
After the success of Ties for Success in mentoring young men, the city of Hinesville embarked on a similar program for young women.
Dozens of young women turned out Saturday morning at Live Oak Church in Hinesville to hear the stories of women who overcame obstacles in their lives to become business owners at the first Dress for Success event.
The event is designed as an empowerment and mentoring workshop for school-aged girls, said Kendra Ivy, administrative assistant for the city's Community Development Department.
The goal is to give girls advice on becoming a businesswoman, she said.
The workshop featured speakers and entrepreneurs who have created pathways for themselves, Ivy said. The event also aimed to show participants how to be a young woman in the world.
It's really, really important that if you can see it, you can be it, Ivy said. That’s really the mantra of this event and our boys event.
Amaya Green-Mobley was one of the speakers and told the girls that life's obstacles can be overcome. She became a mother as a teenager and now owns her own business.
I want them to know that as long as they have an end goal in mind, they can always achieve it, she said. You need to know where you want to be so you know the steps you need to take to get there.
Even as a teenage mother, she didn't want her parents, grandparents, and siblings to lack anything.
You may not understand what you're going through right now, but you can make it happen, she said. No one can stop you but yourself.
