Bobcats ready to face Columbia in first round of NCAA tournament

HAMDEN, Conn. Quinnipiac men's tennis is preparing to take on No. 8 Columbia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 3. This is QU's first NCAA tournament berth since 2010, when they won the NEC and faced Stanford.

The match starts at 1:00 PM at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center in New York, NY. The games will be streamed on Stretch Internet and more information can be found at Gobobcats.com

FIRST MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP IN PROGRAM HISTORY

• The Bobcats defeated top-seeded Fairfield 4-2 in a thriller to capture the first-ever MAAC championship and fifth conference championship overall. (Four in the NEC)
• QU defeated Marist 4-3 in the semi-finals of the tournament, culminating in a marathon match to decide Ayato Arakaki in a match that ended after 9 p.m.

DANIEL VELEK AWARDED MAAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR

• Graduated student Daniel with you was named MAAC Player of the Year as announced by the league office on Friday, April 19.
• The Bobcats finished with 7 All-MAAC selections. Velek was accompanied by Carlos Braun Simo as First Team selection in singles.
• Shaurya Soed and Velek were also named First Team All-MAAC at No. 1 doubles.
• Finn Burridge And Donovan Brown were awarded Second Team All-MAAC for singles and Brown was also named Second Team All-MAAC doubles with partner Ayato Arakaki.

LONE MAAC LOSS AT FAIRFIELD TO END REGULAR SEASON

• Quinnipiac men's tennis dropped its regular season finale to Fairfield by a final score of 4-3.
• with me Carlos Braun SimoAnd Donovan Brown each won their singles matches, but the Bobcats dropped the doubles point.

SENIOR DAY WIN OVER NIAGARA

ROAD WINS OVER RIDER & MOUNT

• QU Men's Tennis won two road matches against Rider and Mount, both by a score of 6-1.
• Against Rider, QU took the doubles point with wins over No. 1 and No. 3 doubles before posting singles victories over Daniel with you, Shaurya Soed, Donovan Brown, Carlos Braun SimoAnd Finn Burridge.
• At Mount, the Bobcats took the doubles point, earned wins over No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and earned singles victories over Daniel with you, Ayato Arakaki, Shaurya Soed, Carlos Braun SimoAnd Finn Burridge.

ARAKAKI IS TABBED MAAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• Arakaki went 4-0 in two MAAC games this past week, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 start in the league.
• On Wednesday, March 27, he collaborated with Donovan Brown to win their No. 3 doubles match against Marist 6-3. The senior then outlasted Marist's Catala 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
• He followed that up with two wins in the Bobcats' 5-2 win over Siena on Saturday, March 30 by teaming up again Donovan Brown to win their No. 3 doubles match 7-6(2) before winning another three sets at No. 2 singles.
• He defeated Varella of Siena 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to earn the point for QU.

MAAC OPENING WIN OVER MARIST

• The Bobcats defeated Marist 4-1 in a weather-delayed game on Wednesday, March 27.
• After sweeps doubles, QU recorded three set wins in singles Daniel with you, Ayato ArakakiAnd Finn Burridge.
• Finn Burridge came back from a set down to tie the match for the Bobcats at No. 5 singles.

SHAURYA SOOD NAMED MAAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• After going 2-0 in the Bobcats victory over Wesleyan, Senior Shaurya Soed was named MAAC Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, March 27.
• He is the second Bobcat to win MAAC Player of the Week honors this season Carlos Braun Simo.

CLOSING WIN OVER WESLEYAN

LOSS AT CORNELL

• The Bobcats were defeated 7-0 on Sunday, March 17 at Cornell.
• Daniel with you was the only Bobcat to win a set, losing his match in a third-set tiebreaker.

• On Saturday, February 24, the Bobcats lost a close battle with LIU.
• Even though they lost the doubles point, Shaurya Soed, Donovan BrownAnd Finn Burridge each won their singles matches.
• On Sunday, February 25, QU lost 4-0 to Army.

LOSS AT MONMOUTH

• QU lost 6-1 to Monmouth last Sunday afternoon.
• Finn Burridge earned the lone point for the Bobcats, winning his No. 6 singles match 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (2).

ROAD LOSS AT BRYANT

• Daniel with you And Finn Burridge were the lone winners in the Bobcats' 5-2 loss to Bryant on Saturday, February 10.
• Velek won his match in three sets after conquering the first set.
• Burridge won in straight sets in sixth place.

WIN AT HOME FROM SAINT MICHAEL'S

• QU won in dominant fashion 7-0 against Saint Michael's on Saturday, February 3.
• They won every doubles match and dropped only five matches in total.
• The Bobcats also won every singles match while dropping just one set.

LOSS VERSUS TEMPLE

BRAUN SIMO APPOINTED MAAC TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• On Wednesday afternoon, freshmen Carlos Braun Simo was named MAAC Tennis Player of the Week after a 3-1 weekend for the Bobcats.
• The native of Munich, Germany, has won seven singles matches as a Bobcat.

LOSS AT YALE

• On Sunday, January 28, the Bobcats lost 6-1 to Yale University at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven.
• The only winner was Carlos Braun Simo at number 4 singles. He defeated Walker Oberg of Yale 6-1, 3-6, 12-10.

FIRST WIN AT HOFSTRA

SEASON OPENING LOSS AT ST. JOHN

• QU dropped its season opener at St. John's on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 7-0.
• Although they did not win the doubles point, Shaurya Soed And Daniel with you won their match 6-3.
• Graduated student Daniel with you won the only singles set for the Bobcats and took the second set in his match 6-4.

#2 PRE-SEASON RANKINGS

• The Bobcats were selected second in the preseason MAAC Coaches' Poll, receiving 43 points and two first-place votes.

AUTUMN SEASON

• QU played in three events in the fall season and finished with an overall singles record of 23-15 and a doubles record of 14-13.
• Shaurya Soed advanced to the round of 16 singles at the ITA Regionals at Yale before falling in straight sets.
• Soud and Carlos Braun Simo each went 5-1 in singles in the fall.
• The first year doubles tandem of Finn Burridge And Carlos Braun Simo went 6-3 together in the fall.

LAST YEAR (2022-23)

• The Bobcats went 10-10 overall during the 2022-2023 regular season and posted a 4-2 league record, earning a share of the MAAC regular season title under first-year Head Coach. Bryan Adinolfi.
• QU defeated Marist 4-3 on April 16 to capture second place in postseason action.

KARAGOZOGLU & SOOD EARN ALL-MAAC HONOR

• Quinnipiac Men's Tennis Student-Athletes Kemal Karagozoglu And Shaurya Soed earned All-MAAC First Team status at No. 1 doubles, as revealed by the league office on Friday, April 21.
• Karagozoglu and Sood helped the Bobcats lead with a perfect 6-0 record from the No. 1 doubles spot in MAAC play during the regular season. The duo went 12-3 overall in the No. 1 doubles match.
