Ipswich teenager represents England in the table tennis championship
Isaac Kinghman will soon travel to Sweden to compete in the upcoming European Youth Table Tennis Championships, which will be held in Malmö from July 12 to 21.
The 16-year-old is currently ranked third in England under-17s.
A former pupil of Ormiston Endeavour Academy in Defore Road, he moved to Charles Read Academy, a table tennis performance centre in Grantham, in September to combine his studies with sport.
Since then, Isaac has gone on to achieve success on both the national and international stage, winning medals in both the U19 and U21 age groups domestically, despite only being 15 at the time.
Internationally, Isaac achieved a bronze medal in mixed doubles at the World Table Tennis Youth Contender in Podgorica, Montenegro, along with a silver medal in the boys under-15 singles.
Just days after completing his GCSE exams, Isaac began three weeks of intensive training for the European Youth Championships. He was therefore very happy that he had been selected to participate.
Isaac said: “It obviously feels great to be selected to play in such a prestigious event, having only just turned 16. Playing in the U19 categories will be one of the toughest challenges I have faced so far, and I am looking forward to competing against the best players in Europe.
Aad Kwakkelstein is head coach at Britannia Table Tennis Club, where Isaac plays.
He said: Even at his young age, Isaac has shown an exceptional attitude to developing himself into one of the best players in the UK.
He approaches his sport like a professional player. This has also helped him cope with his change of scenery and the challenges of studying for his GCSE exams.
If he keeps this attitude, he can go far in table tennis.”
