Shrestha drops out of Olympic table tennis matches
Nepal's Santoo Shrestha was knocked out of the Paris Olympic table tennis competition after the preliminary round, losing his men's singles match to Senegal's Ibrahima Diaw in straight sets (4-0) at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles on Saturday.
Santoo was neck and neck with Senegalese Diaw in the first set, but eventually lost the exciting match 12-10. After being 1-0 down, he could not keep up the intensity and lost the remaining sets 11-3, 11-4, 11-5.
Diaw advanced to the round of 16.
The 24-year-old Santoo is only the third Nepalese player to qualify for the Olympic Games via a selection tournament, after Sangina Baidya (Athens 2004) and Deepak Bista (Beijing 2008). Santoo already won a gold medal at the South Asian qualifying tournament in Kathmandu in May this year.
It is also the first time that Nepal is making its table tennis debut at the Olympic Games.
Nepal has sent seven athletes to the Paris Olympics.
Swimmer Duana Lama will compete in the women's 200-meter freestyle on Sunday.
Other action on Sunday is the women's 10m air rifle event. Sushmita Nepal will represent Nepal at the Paris shooting event.
Judoka Manita Shrestha Pradhan will face Marica Perisic from Serbia in the women's 57 kg weight class Elimination round of 32 on Monday. Shrestha Pradhan is placed in Pool A in the women's judo competition held at the Grand Palais Ephemere.
Swimmer Alexander Shah will compete in the men's 100-meter freestyle on Tuesday.
Long-distance runner Santoshi Shrestha will compete in the women's marathon on August 11.
