Olympics: Hayata overshadowed by Sun in women's table tennis semi-final
PARIS (Kyodo) — Hina Hayata failed to become the first Japanese to reach an Olympic table tennis singles final, losing in straight games to China's top seed Sun Yingsha in the semifinals on Friday.
Third-seeded Hayata led by one point in the first two games, but Sun, the world champion and silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, won 11-6, 11-8, 11-8, 11-2 in 39 minutes at the South Paris Arena.
“I wasn't 100 percent and wondered how hard I could fight,” said Hayata, who had her injured left wrist taped after losing her 16th straight match to Sun. “As expected, I felt my limitations, but I'm glad I was able to try until the end.”
“Today was what I've been working hard for the past three years. I feel bad for those who supported and toughened me up that I wasn't able to show my best self.”
Hayata advances to the bronze medal match on Saturday against fourth-seeded South Korean team Shin Yu Bin, who lost to second-seeded Chinese Chen Meng, also in straight games.
