Teen table tennis star makes history with Paralympic bronze
Brighton's Bly Twomey made history when she won bronze in table tennis on her Paralympic debut at the age of 14.
The teenager won bronze in the women's doubles with Fliss Pickard, claiming the first Paralympic doubles medal in table tennis since 1976, before Twomey's parents were born.
Playing with a partner more than twice her age, Twomey felt at ease on the biggest stage. She played with passion as she and Pickard lost 3-1 to Wenjuan Huang and Yucheng Jin of China, confirming their position as bronze medallists.
“It’s amazing because I’m so young and I wouldn’t have done this without Fliss, so I’m really proud to have her by my side,” said the Cardinal Newman Catholic School pupil, who is part of Aldis’ Nearest and Dearest programme in partnership with Team GB, which aims to maximise support for athletes and minimise potential distractions so they can focus on their performance.

Twomey makes her debut in women's and mixed doubles. In Paris 2024, doubles will replace team events.
The European bronze medallist secured her first Paralympic medal in her first competition at the Games, when she won the opening match 3-0 against Pickard.
After winning the mixed doubles against Joshua Stacey, they lost in the semi-finals to Huang and Jin.
There was no time to lose as Twomey was back playing with Stacey less than an hour after they had won the British Paralympic team's first table tennis medal.
She added: I find each match is less nerve-wracking and I just love the atmosphere.
Playing four games is quite tiring, but it just feels great to keep going and keep fighting.
Twomey will also compete in the women's singles, as she hopes to win more prizes. She only started playing the sport in 2021.
Doubles partner Pickard called her a little legend and explained the impact the young woman had had on her career, as the Burnley-born athlete also made her Paralympic debut.
The 30-year-old said: I started playing table tennis when I was 16. Her temperament and determination, she is a real fighter and the talent she shows is just incredible.
She really took me to new heights in table tennis, she doesn't realize she's doing it, but that's the reason I'm here today and at the level I'm at.
