Caligiana Joins Cal Mens Tennis Staff
BERKELEY Andrea Caligiana has joined the California men's tennis team as assistant coach, Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis Chris Quinta announced on Thursday.
Caligiana, previously of Middle Tennessee State, was the Blue Raiders’ associate head coach in 2023-24 and won the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year award for the Ohio Valley Region last season after helping MTSU post a 21-10 record and reach the second round of the NCAA Championship. He also coached at New Mexico and Wichita State, his alma mater.
Originally from Perugia, Italy, Caligiana played three seasons for Wichita State and graduated in 2020.
Caligiana, whose nickname is “Cali,” joins a Cal coaching staff that also includes an assistant coach Vasileios Iliopoulos.
“Cali brings a lot of recruiting expertise and coaching expertise from Middle Tennessee State,” Kwinta said. “His teams have been successful in the top 20, 25 every year he's been there. And they beat us last year, which caught my attention. He's just a really nice guy and a knowledgeable coach, and he's a great fit for a school like Berkeley, with an international roster. His philosophy on coaching and developing players aligns with mine, so it was an easy fit for us. His nickname also fits Berkeley well. It was a no-brainer.”
Caligiana served as an assistant coach at MTSU for three seasons (2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23), helping the Blue Raiders to a 15th-ranked ITA poll and a 16th-ranked NCAA Championship in 2022. During his tenure, the Blue Raiders won three consecutive NCAA first-round appearances (2022-24) and four consecutive Conference USA tournament titles (2021-24). Caligiana coached 10 ITA-polled student-athletes while at MTSU and coached and recruited 10 ATP-ranked players.

Caligiana replaces former assistant coach Francis Sargeantwho left Cal to pursue other opportunities.
The Golden Bears will begin the 2024-25 season by hosting the Battle in the Bay Classic qualifying tournament from September 6-8.
