Bloomington Kennedy will drop its boys hockey team due to low youth participation
Bloomington Kennedy's 60th season as a boys hockey team concludes.
The school announced Thursday that it will eliminate its boys hockey program after the 2024-25 season and encouraged athletes to play at Bloomington Jefferson. Kennedy and Jefferson already have a co-op in girls hockey.
“Absolutely sad,” said Kennedy Activities Director Jon Anderson. “We have a rich tradition that goes back to the '60s. We wish we could maintain a standalone program.”
A statement on the school's website cited low participation as the reason for the decision.
Since the Eagles’ inaugural season in 1965, the population, demographics, culture and economy of East Bloomington have changed dramatically, the statement said. These changes have contributed to a decline in East Side participation in youth sports.
According to Anderson, the cost of participating in hockey played a role in the decline.
Hockey is an expensive sport, he said. We try to make all sports as affordable as possible. Some communities are seeing lower participation.
Bloomington Kennedy, long associated with the term East Side Pride, has made seven state tournament appearances and won one state championship, in 1987, led by forward Jason Miller, who later played for the Gophers. The Eagles finished second in 1984.
