Rest of HS football season canceled for Newburgh Free Academy due to code of conduct violations
NEWBURGH, New York (WABC) — A Newburgh school district has decided to cancel a high school football team's season amid an investigation into allegations of locker room violence.
Last Friday night's homecoming festivities at Newburgh Free Academy in Orange County were canceled, but the superintendent announced Tuesday that the remainder of the season would also be canceled.
“While I regret this outcome, it is a necessary step as we continue to gather information, support those affected and ensure accountability for those affected,” said Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell, Superintendent of Schools for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.
The allegations involved members of both the JV and Varsity football teams, and the incident in question injured a varsity football player. Officials said they became aware of alleged violations of the student code of conduct on Oct. 25.
Sources told Eyewitness News that the incident started as a joke after a training session got out of hand. Players began throwing chairs at each other, causing one student to suffer serious bruising.
The district said the incident involved multiple people, was non-sexual, but constituted significant code of conduct violations.
“I recognize that some of our students and families feel frustrated and believe they are being unfairly punished for the actions of a few,” Campbell said. “I would like to reaffirm that the safety and well-being of all our scientists remains my top priority. The timing of the information the district received was unfortunate as it impacted unrelated student activities and led to the cancellation of the athletic season. As Chief Inspector, I must ensure that this investigation is thorough and free from outside influence.”
