5 Westmoreland teams leave Western Pa. Youth Football League to form their own
Pennsylvania's largest youth football competition became a bit smaller this week, when five teams from Westmoreland County chose to leave and form their own competition in the aftermath of a police investigation.
The Western Pennsylvania Youth Football League, in which the teams of Westmoreland had played, is examined about the disappearance of money from the bank account of the competition.
Youth football groups from Derry Area, Greater Latrobe, Greensburg Salem, Mt. Pleasant and Southmoreland sent a letter that informed parents that they chose to form the Keystone Foothills Football League. The groups are named after local school districts, but are not officially affiliated with them.
The Western Pennsylvania Youth Football League, which included 44 organizations and 140 teams in seven provinces, is investigated by the Chief William Deforte by the regional police of Greene County. He said that his department was approached by the parents and league members about the lack of money in the bank account of the league, which is financed by income from the gate costs of each team.
Deforte did not say how much money is supposedly missing.
In the aftermath of the investigation, the old president of the competition, William Spencer, resigned at the beginning of March without any clear statement, apart from a short letter to the competition.
The test involved various youth football parents.
“We were asked to go to Washington County for a (continued) competition meeting where we received some information about the fund situation and preliminary budgets for the coming year,” said Rebecca Salandro, president of the Latrobe Youth Football board. “I think we just didn't feel comfortable with the WPYfl. There was a lot of uncertainty among the five schools that decided to form this new competition.”
Salandro said her primary care was to ensure that her teams and cheerleaders will have a football season.
Sarah Reping, president of the youth football program of Derry Area, agreed.
“The WPYFL told us that they have created a new sign, and this has nothing to do with those new board members,” Salandro said. “But we were worried from a parent position about what things would look like.”
Reeping said that the board of Derry met and chose to go with the Keystone Foothills League.
“We think this is a good step,” she said.
Both Salandro and Reping said they are looking forward to the shorter journey time for games, in a competition with only five teams in the province.
“We hope that this makes a little more family involvement possible,” said Salandro. “Grandparents don't want to drive to a youth football match for an hour and a half. But they are happy to drive 20 minutes further.”
From a financial point of view, the teams in the new Keystone Foothills League will see extra income in their treasury. Gate costs for WPYfl games were sent to the competition to finance play -off games and other expenses, and may be one of the funds that are missing. Those gate costs now stay with their respective teams.
“We still have a few things to determine, such as what the standard port costs will be for all teams, but I see this as an important victory for all of us,” said Salandro.
WPYFL team officials and Spencer could not be achieved for comment and their website contains no contact details.
