Herenhockeys season, Schaaners career ends with the defeat of the Boston in the regional final of Boston University

This story has been updated
Toledo, Ohio One Shot can change everything.
For Hokhockey, one shot could have sent it to the Frozen Four, somewhere, head coach Mike Schafer 86 had only been once before.
For Boston University, one shot sent it to the third consecutive championship weekend. For Cornell, one shot ended a Cinderella season and an incomprehensible legendary career.
Herenhockey saw the season ending on Saturday in Toledo, Ohio and fell in the extension of 3-2 to Boston University. Cornell scored a late goal of the third period to send the match to extra time before Bus Quinn Hutson 6:25 scored in the extra period to promote his terriers to the frozen four.
The game marks the last career of Schaafers. The regional final is something that Schafer has missed in 11 performances, the head coach only won once, which happened 22 years ago.
I am the best freak coach to start the first round of the NCAA [Tournament]. I just couldn't get it done in the second round, Schafer said laughing. But I think it's okay. I'm okay with my career and I'm very proud of it.
Saturday marked eight consecutive NCAA regional final losses. Three were in the extension. Six out of eight were for one goal.
One shot.
Senior goalkeeper Ian Shane also saw his Cornell career ending and made a season-high 40 saves, which also stands as the second most of a single match in his career. The shot that hit him was one of a distance, his own forward showed him while it kept under his arm.
[Hutsons goal] Was just one of those goals. You throw it on the net, and it goes through, right? And what are you going to do? It just hurts, Schaferer said.
The Reds Storybook season has ended and ended with 19-11-6. Cornell wants to fight his regional final demons next year, only this time with associated head coach Casey Jones 90 at the helm.
I mean, it's the best job in the country: [the] Dear band, best university, best combination of hockey and academics, Schafer said. I am very grateful, but I am angry. [Im] competitive. So if you ask about emotion, I would lie if I didn't say there was a lot of hatred because he lost tonight.
BU came out with more jump, but it was Cornell that the first goal of the Games earned. Junior attacker Dalton Bancrofoft's first shot was blocked by Bu -goalkeeper Mikhail Yegorov, but the rebound hit second -year student Ryan Walsh and Ricochode in the net. The score was originally called no-goal, stating a hand pass, but Schaafers Challenge successfully destroyed the call, giving the Red a 1-0.
But just as Cornell did on Thursday, it struggled after he got on the board. Only 1:12 after Walshs count, BU immediately set the score to its own purpose that of the skate of senior defender Hank Kempf and Past Shane Sruppel.
With only 2:00 in the period, a long-term review resulted after a post-whistle Scrum in a five-minute large facemask penalty called on Walsh. The red would have the task of killing five minutes of the fourth best power play of the nations.
As time decreased, Bu Cornell continued to push and catch up in Schoten after collecting seven unanswered. But the terriers the most punished team in the nation made an undisciplined game to cut a Cornell stick while the clock hit zero.
Both the red and the terriers were bound in almost every stat category after 40 minutes. Both teams had 23 shots on the goal of each counts 13 and 10 in the first and second periods, respectively. Cornell had won a slight lead in Faceoffs, 16-15, and the score was tied on 1-1.
It was a real back and forth game, a really even game. We knew they [had] A pretty flashy attack, but I thought we managed some of their pushes reasonably well, said senior defender Hank Kempf. I thought we played with a pretty good pace during many of our pushs. Sometimes the bounces just didn't go on our way.
The second period almost passed without a single penalty that was called up, but Bancroft was whitening because he was holding just when the last buzzer sounded and BU granted a Power Play to start the third period.
It only took 34 seconds for the Power Play from Terriers to be clicked. Cole Hutson skated hard and snipped the Puck Far Corner against Shane and supplied BU the first lead of the night.
On his heels for the first time all game, Cornell scribbled to find the equal goal. In turn, BU played calmly and composed, making Cornells game immediately again, while the Red struggled to establish time in his attacking zone.
Cornell got the momentum swing he was looking for when a BU -box was arrested to stumble at 8:52 of the third period. And although Cornell would not convert, the minutes of attacking zone pressure eventually culminated in the equal purpose it needed. Senior attacker Jack Oleary finished a handy feed and defeated Yegorov to make it a 2-2 match with 5:30 to play.
What can you ask more about [from] Your athletes? You cannot go back and change from time, and everything you can do is see how we played, Schafer said. We came to play hard, and we did. We showed a great comeback.
The terriers almost told Cornells with their own goal after a turnover from Bancroft resulted in a flurry of shots that Shane jumped on top. Looking to prevent this from being his last game, the senior was fantastic between the pipes for Cornell, just like his counterpart first -year student Yegorov.
Cornell founded a few Faceoff games when more minutes left in seconds, but extra time would eventually be needed to determine which team would go to the frozen four.
Overtime started with a few Prime Opportunities of Cornell after a few large rebounds from Yegorov. But things quickly became favorable in bus, with the terriers who determine the time of the zone and shot shot after shot at Shane.
Eventually people squeaked through it. Quinn Hutson was the hero for BU, found a seam and sent his team to the frozen four for the third consecutive season.
It took minutes before the last Cornell player left the ice. Some kept hanging seniors Kempf and Shane, who then went to the dressing room to drop the Carnelian sweater for the last time.
[Schafer] Has really been the biggest mentor in my life, outside my family, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, Kempf said. It has just been such a great four years. I can't believe it's over.
Schafer was commissioned to pay both with the end of his own career and that of his seniors.
There is nothing that you can say that way at the time. I just closed our dressing room because it is difficult for someone to be in that dressing room to see what is going on with those guys, Schafer said that every coach went through it, every program when the seniors [are] Done, it's one of the most emotional, hard things like athlete.
At the end of all this, the terriers get another chance for a national championship. Schafer will not.
[Cornell] has given me everything. It has given my family everything. It gave me joy. It has given me security [and] A great place in Ithaca to raise my children, Schafer said. It has done everything in my life that I think a person would want. So it's not a bad good career and an incredible woman and family, and that's all you can ask.
