Flag football is growing in Michigan. Siena Heights starts season of Primeurs

A new competitive collegial flag football team for women, the only one in the state, will go to the home field for the first time this weekend.

Siena Heights University, who has announced plans for a team in 2023“ has started with his first season, because the interest in flag football accelerates in Michigan, especially at the level of high school, where at least 18 girls' teams in Metro Detroit start this year.

The new team made its official debut on the road in Florida earlier this month and played 14 games with a record of 7-7.

The team of Private Catholic College in Adrian, about an hour and a half southwest of Detroit, is eager to show the excitement around the sport for a home crowd.

“We are very enthusiastic. It is one of those things where the first in the state, the first in the conference, we are not lucky, such as these other teams that can drive onto the road, can scrim a local rival school or something like that,” said Siena Heights flag football Jesse Siordia. “These girls have put a lot of work to compete against each other.”

The team spent their first month on the road travel by Florida, Illinois and Kentucky with more established teams in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (Naia), the administrative body of athletics in which Siena Heights participates. Siordia said he first wanted to play harder teams to test the toughness of his teams.

“Our first week is a cheeky schedule and I made it that way that way, because I wanted to see how we take a slap and see what we are going to do, when we are going to respond or rollover and a little wilt,” said the navy veteran who was a team in Pontiac and was part of Armour's football football program. “It will tell me a lot, and I think these girls have the challenge and can compete with the four -year programs.”

The inaugural selection consists of 17 players, usually first -year student who comes from Florida, where flag football has been a sanctioned high school for more than two decades, According to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Only four players in the team come from Michigan.

Helen Flores, an 18-year-old first-year student of Rochester Hills and the team captain, was the first player to sign Siordia at a trade show to play in the new team. Although this year is sidelined because of an ACL injury, she is enthusiastic to see her teammates build on their expectations, knowing that all eyes will be on them.

“I think the expectation is to come up with a great season, learn a lot and play hard and we are going to compete,” said Flores, who started playing in primary school at boys' teams. “We have high expectations for ourselves and I think we can keep ourselves to them.”

Assistant -head coach Malcomb Ross said his goal is that the team has a .500 record and the Naia Flag Football Championship Tournament will be getting.

“My expectations are that we are eight in the elite,” said Ross.

Siorda said that the thought of playing at home for the first time gave him shivers.

The team has worked hard to get to this point, such as “you see in the films.”

He expects to be a little starstruck.

“We are going to have a good outing and everyone who encourages us, I hope I don't get that 'deer in a headlight' because it will really be.”

Siena Heights will play two games on Friday. Tickets are available at the gate and go for $ 10.
