James Wharton hit a dominant 98 out of 86 balls and headed a trio of a half centures during a hard -fought day of friendly cricket with Lancashire in Headingley today.

Yorkshires Final Day of Pre-season promotion before Friday Rothesay County Championship Opener in Hampshire saw them respond to Lancashires Opening Day 288-14, closing to 397-8 of 78 overs.

Opener Fin Bean was measured more than Wharton and hit 59 out of 87 balls. Later in the day, Dom Bess did not retreat to a Run-A ball 53, while Harry Duke did the same at 43 out of 66.

Left-arm sailor Ollie Sutton was at the forefront for Lancashire with 3-49 of nine overs.

After the red rose had beaten one all day, the white rose would do the same up to and including day two, which was more cloudy.

Despite the early loss of Adam Lyth, Yorkshire dominated the morning thanks to second-wicket pair of Wharton and opener Bean.

From 27-1 over in the 10th, they added another 123 to lunch within 18 overs, where the hosts reached on 151-1 on 27.

Bean almost pushed a few early borders right along the ground and pulled with conviction, while a few Wharton cover from England Lions Pacer Mitch Stanley Dreef, in particular attracted attention.

He rode another one from Tom Aspinwalls-seam to reach his fifty in 45 balls before Bean struck a short ball from left-old Josh Boyden for Point not long after not to raise his fifty in 66 balls.

The couple raised their partnership to 147 in the early stages of the afternoon before Bean was trapped LBW by Sutton-170-2 in the 32nd.

But Wharton raised the same bowler and long for a few sixths when he raced to 98. Unfortunately, however, he did another attempt at Loft over the top to halfway, and finished his innings with 19 four and two sixes.

Bean had beaten 11 four in 87 balls.

Lancashire has held more on a second team in the last few days than a scoop, and they were under the Cosh this morning.

But the honor for them, they responded well in the afternoon and had better from things to tea, where Yorkshire reached 271-7.

Dawid Malan fell for six and George Hill and Jonny Bairstow for eight each.

Malan sent Sutton to Second Slip for Aspinwall Bowled Hill and captive captain Bairstow LBW, leaving the score at 220-6 in the 43rd.

Will Luxton was the next time to go, for nine, bent by a beauty of an in-ducker from Academy Seamer Hassan Mughal, who played for Bradford League side Jer Lane last summer after he had moved from Cherry Tree in his hometown of Blackburn.

Jonny Tattersall stabilized things with a pleasant 30 on both sides of tea before he was caught behind the new Balanheran Tom Bailey, leaving Yorkshire at 273-8 in the 55th.

At this stage the hosts came a total of 288 after the Lancashires, and they went further than Duke and Bess, who were both busy sharing 87 within 16 overs for the ninth wicket.

With about 45 minutes left in the day, and with Bess just fifty of 52 balls have been reached, both men walked away to give others time at the fold.

Bess had square Mughal for his 11th border and reached his fifty.

Luxton returned to the fold, accompanied by Jordan Thompson.

Luxton hit six and two about Mid-Wicket, from Harry Singh's Off-spin, in 27 not before the players shake hands at 5.45 pm. Thompson ended with nine.

Fin Bean said:

For our young boys, division two might be a blessing to play games in first -class cricket and to develop and understand our games and to be better equipped for division one.

I think we have a great core group of players and then have Mala to come back to the mix, Jonny and Dan Rooty and Brooky, I think we are in a very good place as a group to compete in the One division.

There is a stat that says the speed and (the amount of) short balls do not go up from division two to division one. It is just that the forward defense percentages rise.

So it was just about the technical coordination of coordination. That was the most important focus that entered this winter.

It can be ruthless (confronted with Division One Bowlers), but it is about being well equipped to deal with it. If you fight that, I think you're in a good place.
