This was not just a hockey game, it was a showcase of support for Raleigh police officer Max Gillick.
In January a shooter Gillick shot down as he responded to an armed burglary in a house in Democracy Street. A man in the house was killed during the burglary and the suspect was killed in a shooting with the police.
Gillick was seriously injured during the shooting and spent weeks in the hospital. Since then the officer has recovered.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, 3,107 people showed up at the game and picked up $ 12,533 for Gillick. Since the shooting $ 70,364 has been picked up for Gillick during his recovery.
“It's pretty overwhelming,” said Mark Gillick, Max's father. “With the city of Raleigh that collects around our family from the moment it happened, tonight it is just incredible.”
Mark Gillick revealed that his son has lost weight and adds that he is doing better, but is still confronted with obstacles in his recovery.
“He is very antsy. He just doesn't like to sit around,” said Mark Gillick in an interview with Wral Anchor/Reporter Debra Morgan. “It will be fine.”
