Devon Paralympian strives for World Marathon Record on crutches

A former GB Paralympian team says that he “wants to show people what is possible” when he tries to walk the fastest marathon on crutches.

David Wetherill, who played Table Tennis at three Paralympic Games, was born with a bone condition called several Epiphyspleysplasia (Med) – which means he had to use crutches every day since he was 10.

The 35-year-old entered the London Marathon on April 27 and wants to break the world record for the fastest marathon while he used crutches.

The current record State at 6:11:11 when it was set by Chris Terrill of East Sussex.

Wetherill, who lives in Plymouth but grew up in Torpoint, said that setting up a new record would be great, but he also wanted to inspire others.

“It's never really about breaking records, it's what they actually mean and the broader goal behind them,” he said.

“If we can use this as a management to show people what is possible and to raise some money, then that is essentially the dream.”

He ran his first marathon in Barcelona last year and registered an unofficial time of 5 hours and 44 minutes, which would have broken the existing record.

Wetherill said that completing a marathon on crutches meant that he had to fight by what he described as a “pain cave”.

“My hip is actually dangling out of his joint at the moment and I am in pain, whether I am in bed or marathons, so my philosophy is that I might as well run a marathon,” he said.

'Push myself'

Wetherill said that life as a top athlete and training as an “absolute animal” had improved its mental resilience over the years and he felt prepared to take on any challenge.

“I have been in situations in my life where I felt pretty helpless and I felt in desperation – I felt that I can't do things,” he said.

“Growing up with a handicap, inherent you have those times, and it is not always easy, and I think I am so addicted to push myself now.

“I didn't just get off the couch and decided to run a marathon, I almost trained my whole life for this.”

The London Marathon is on April 27.
