Record breaking win – Cricket Ireland
Ireland Women set up their highest ever successful run in T20 International cricket, beating Pakistan by 7 wickets in Clontarf today.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Pakistan quickly began amassing a highly competitive score of 176-6 in their 20 overs. Opener Muneeba Ali Siddiqi’s 65 from 41 balls helped get them off to a fast start – at nearly 10-over on the first powerplay.
The home side may have taken some tough catches but ended the innings well with a wicket and just three runs in the final over, restricting Pakistan to 176-6 – an innings that at one point seemed destined for 200+. For Ireland, Ava Canning took two wickets, while Orla Prendergast, Arlene Kelly and Alana Dalzell took one each.
Amy Hunter needed 177 to win and started hitting balls to all parts of the ground. Her 56 (41 balls) contained 7 fours and a six and fell in the 12e about trying to lift a ball over the long outside boundary.
Rebecca Stokell (60* from 42 balls) started a measured innings early, happy to turn the tide and get Hunter out. Once Hunter fell, Stokell took on the more aggressive role and the runs started to flow – her partnership with Prendergast of 77 from 40 balls putting Ireland within striking distance of the target.
Prendergast fell for 33 off 17 balls in the penultimate over, but by then the run rate required had fallen sharply. Leah Paul (4*) came to the crease to help bowl out the last few runs, completing the task from the first ball of the last over with a single for Stokell.
Ireland are back in action tomorrow at the same venue against the West Indies.
