Resolution in Georgia football player Ja’Marley Riddle’s drug possession case
The Brunswick District Attorney’s Office will not prosecute Georgia football defender Ja’Marley Riddle on two drug possession charges following a May 8 arrest, according to a state motion obtained Thursday by the Athens Banner-Herald.
On Monday, July 6, a Nolle Prosequi was filed in Glynn County Superior Court.
Riddle, a transfer of Eastern Carolinawas charged by Glynn County Police with possession of marijuana over one ounce, possession of a schedule 1 controlled substance and speeding.
The Kingsland, Georgia, resident allegedly drove a Dodge Durango 90 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone on I-95 South.
When Riddle was pulled over, the police report said an “overwhelming odor of marijuana” could be smelled from the vehicle.
The state’s motion said the state could not determine whether a vape device found in the vehicle contained THC and cited his work in the community.
“The defendant is a 19-year-old college student with no criminal record who has volunteered for ‘Where Colors Shine,’ a program to help children with cancer,” said the state’s July 2 motion, signed by Assistant District Attorney James Abely. “On May 8, 2026, the defendant was the driver of a vehicle; a vape device was located in the backseat of the vehicle – out of the defendant’s reach. The vaping liquid may have contained THC. The State cannot determine the THC level, if liquid. Additionally, the GBI laboratory does not currently measure the THC levels of such liquids.”
Riddle told police there was no marijuana in the vehicle, but later explained there was, the police report said.
In a July 1 dismissal order, all three charges against Riddle, including the speeding charge, were now dismissed.
Georgia Athletics did not respond to a request for comment about Riddle on Thursday. It said on May 14 that it was gathering information but would not comment further on “an ongoing legal matter.”
