CrushFTP urges customers to patch their file transfer tools as soon as possible

The company announced Monday that a vulnerability in its popular file transfer tool CrushFTP has already been exploited in an attack.

Last week, the company issued both public and private notices to customers about a vulnerability affecting a version of its file transfer tool that was first disclosed on April 19th.

The vulnerability was discovered by Simon Garrelou of Airbus CERT and tagged CVE-2024-4040 on Monday afternoon. The latest version of the tool includes patches that fix bugs.

CrushFTP officials told Recorded Future News that they are not yet aware of affected customers, but that a breach is likely.

They said it must have been there, but they just weren't aware of it yet because the updates were slow to apply.

We have confirmed that customers who have already been patched have been investigated for vulnerabilities. If it had not been updated, important configuration information would have been stolen. It cannot be overemphasized that customers should update immediately or operate in whitelist mode, blocking all but known good IPs.

The vulnerability, first reported by BleepingComputer, sparked alarm as the company said in a private notice that it could allow users to retrieve system files that are not part of their files. [virtual file system].

The company told customers that this could result in escalation as learning progresses.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike issued its own advisory, saying its team had observed this exploit being used in the wild in a targeted manner. CrowdStrike noted that multiple U.S. companies were affected and said the intelligence-gathering activity could be politically motivated.

CrushFTP said it is difficult to confirm whether a customer has been exploited by the type of vulnerability because there is no silver bullet search term to check when searching logs.

File transfer tools are easy targets for hackers interested in data theft. Two of the biggest security incidents of 2023 revolved around zero-day vulnerabilities in file transfer tools MOVEit and GoAnywhere, exposing thousands of organizations to hackers and stealing the data of millions. .
