AFIMSC Showcases Installation Techniques and Tools at AirVenture Oshkosh > Eglin Air Force Base > View Article
JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – Teams from the Air Force Facilities and Mission Support Center will be showcasing cutting-edge technology along with teams from five other Air Force Materiel Command Centers at the world's largest fly-in air show, July 22-28 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
AFMC is the Air Force's premier command center featured at AirVenture Oshkosh 2024, and its six centers will feature exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on activities showcasing how the command powers America's Air and Space Forces.
While all units within AFMC play a vital role in providing winning capabilities to the warfighter, it is the men and women of AFIMSC who specialize in ensuring Airmen and Guardians have the powerful power projection platforms they need to fly, fight and win in the air and in space.
“Our global team of more than 4,000 members provides installation and mission support capabilities for the Department of the Air Force's 83 installations, enabling power projection, mission execution and quality of life programs for service members and their families,” said Maj. Gen. John Allen, AFIMSC commander. “We pride ourselves on innovating and working to leverage data and technology to deploy force faster, better and cheaper, which is even more important in this era of increased great power competition.”
During AirVenture, the center will showcase two programs that impact missions around the world: the Geospatial Engineering Office and the Civil Engineer Lab.
Geospatial Engineering Office
The Air Force Civil Engineer Center's Geospatial Engineering Office supports the Air Force GeoBase program from headquarters to base. The office enables the delivery of trusted geospatial engineering data, maps and services to build, maintain and recover power projection platforms for the Air Force and Space Force and their mission partners.
Recently, the office assisted with an aircraft accident investigation at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. The office's Rapid Response Small Unmanned Aerial Systems team rapidly collected and provided 2D and 3D imagery to the on-site commander and interim safety committee to aid in the investigation.
“GeoBase is a 'one base, one map' solution for Air Force organizations that shows commanders the quantity, location and real-time operational status of assets, materiel and capabilities on their installations,” said James Ray, geographic information systems specialist.
“Our goal is to build an integrated database and mapping system that will enable many uses, including disaster response, expeditionary operations, aircraft accident investigation, facilities management and force protection,” he said.
Visitors to the GeoBase exhibit can learn about GIS technology and see how the program supports businesses, and hands-on demonstrations allow visitors to explore select Air Force bases and flight areas around Oshkosh.
Civil Engineering Laboratory
The Air Force CE Lab conducts science, technology, research, development, test and evaluation activities to provide new and improved capabilities to civil engineers. Examples of technologies developed and delivered include water and fuel asset repair systems after attacks or damage, rapid airfield damage assessment systems, and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) robots.
“All of our work is for the Soldier,” said Dr. Bobby Dilts, an airfield restoration specialist at the institute. “We develop technology that protects, supports and augments our Soldiers, equipping them with the best tools and equipment to perform their missions safely and efficiently.”
The lab will display robotic heavy equipment, EOD robots, examples of 3D printed cement, and demonstrations of augmented and virtual reality technology at the air show.
“We're excited for people to stop by and see what our team can do,” Dilts said.
