Google will start scrolling through all your photos with its “Ask Photos” feature

Google's AI-powered “Ask Photos” feature, previewed at Google I/O 2024, has begun early testing, as first reported by 9to5 Google. “Ask Photos” employs Google's Gemini AI to search users' photo libraries using natural language without the need to organize or tag images. Google hasn't revealed a release date, but a select group of users has been asked to try it out and provide feedback before rolling it out more widely.

Ask Photos essentially extends Gemini's ability to parse visual information from a user's photos. The AI ​​can then search for images, presumably in albums or on the device that the AI ​​has permission to access and search. This isn't just a keyword search — the AI ​​can also answer questions posed by the user. For example, in the first demo at Google I/O, CEO Sundar Pichai showed how you can ask your phone for your car's license plate number. The answer comes from a photo of the car's license plate in your album.

The version featured by 9to5 Google was spotted by a Pixel 8 Pro user. While Ask Photos had its own tab in the official demo, the feature now appears to be available via a “Ask” button next to the search bar in the Search tab. Tapping the button brings up Ask Photos as a new interface, complete with sample prompts and space to write your own answer to the question “What would you like to see?” However, parts of the feature are still in testing, and the sample prompt “My photos taken in chronological order” returned a technical error response and a suggestion to “Use traditional search.” Either way, the feature appears to have vanished shortly after users first saw it.
