U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer Announces New Federal Grant Funding for Binghamton-Led Battery Project
Binghamton University and its New Energy New York program partners have again received federal funding to build a battery and energy storage ecosystem in upstate New York.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer announced Wednesday that the NENY project will receive a $500,000 Consortium Accelerator Award through the Federal Tech Hub Program he helped secure for Binghamton and its coalition of partners and created through his CHIPS & Science Law initiative, to further the region's ongoing efforts to pursue capital opportunities and attract new businesses and investment.
The announcement came during a visit to Washington, DC this week, where representatives from New Energy New York had the opportunity to explain why Upstate New York is fertile ground for battery and energy storage investment. Schumer also welcomed representatives from the Binghamton University-led Upstate New York Battery Hub to Capitol Hill, where they touted the region's growth in research and development and innovation to federal agencies, philanthropic organizations and private investors.
“Today, we showed the country that American batteries can and should be made in Binghamton, not Beijing,” Schumer said. “I'm proud to bring representatives from Binghamton University and our partners to Capitol Hill to show philanthropists and private investors that Binghamton and upstate New York are leading the effort to bring battery innovation back to America. I've been working for years to develop and pass new programs that will spur economic development, bring manufacturing back to America, create good-paying jobs and stimulate scientific innovation. With hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding that I've secured, specifically with places like Binghamton and upstate New York in mind, that vision is becoming a reality. Working together, we're creating jobs and attracting new companies to the region while strengthening the battery supply chain. I look forward to making even more progress as we continue to establish Binghamton as a hub for battery research and manufacturing.”
“I am so proud of Binghamton and all of our consortium partners for these successful efforts in the battery and energy storage space,” said Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger. “We are pleased to receive additional federal funding to support our progress, and we are grateful to Senator Schumer, who has been our biggest advocate and staunch supporter. Not only has he brought even more federal funding to our region, but he has once again brought national attention to the Southern Tier and Upstate New York, which has been extremely helpful in connecting our region with industry prospects and potential investors. This kind of support is invaluable.”
Schumer said the Consortium Accelerator Award will enable the Binghamton-led Battery Hub to maintain momentum and capitalize on the benefits of the Tech Hub designation, which provides multiple more ways federal agencies and community partners can accelerate a tech hub's growth. Schumer's DC meeting was part of a multi-day opportunity for designated tech hubs, including New York's two tech hubs, to promote their regions to philanthropic leaders, including prominent foundations like the Rockefeller Foundation and private investors like venture capital funds, to showcase regional investment opportunities and attract more private capital to efforts to develop these regions into innovation leaders.
The Innovative Capital event provided an opportunity for representatives from Tech Hubs and NSF Engine ecosystems across the country to engage with individuals and investment groups focused on advanced manufacturing, advanced computers and semiconductors, energy innovation, biotechnology and health. Regional Innovation Officers from Tech Hubs across the country and CEOs from all Engines presented information about what their ecosystems have to offer, while also identifying unique opportunities locally.
Participants also had the opportunity to hear directly from policymakers such as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves and White House officials on the government's commitment to localized innovation. One of the main focuses was the discussion of how all these ecosystems can work to bridge the gap and strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors through dialogue with key U.S. government investors. Participants also had the opportunity to hear directly from leaders from NSF and the Department of Commerce, NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan, and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.
“We'd like to thank the National Science Foundation and the Department of Commerce for organizing a fantastic event that brought together NSF Regional Innovation Engines, EDA Tech Hubs, capital providers, and philanthropists,” said Meera Sampath, CEO of Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine. “The event was a wonderful opportunity to share our vision and goals, network, and exchange ideas. We hope that this day will spark many fruitful new collaborations. We'd like to especially thank Senator Schumer for his continued support of our efforts.”
“It's very powerful to be among a vetted community in this room that has been selected for advancing innovation, global competitiveness, and national security,” said Marnie LaVigne, president and CEO of Launch NY and a member of the governance committee for the New Energy Storage Engine in Upstate New York. “We're so grateful for Senator Schumer's leadership in bringing together capital providers who will help the engine achieve its goals.”
“The Innovative Capital Summit allowed us to showcase the incredible work NENY has accomplished through EDA's Build Back Regional Challenge, which led to the prestigious Tech Hub designation and subsequent opportunities provided by NSF ENGINE funding,” said Per Stromhaug, Regional Economic Competitiveness Officer and Interim Regional Innovation Officer. “Connecting with capital providers at the event allowed us to build new relationships and explore ways our programs and companies can attract funding to further NENY's mission and impact.”
“We are thrilled that Senator Schumers recognized Binghamton University's pivotal role in earning the Battery and Energy Storage Tech Hub designation,” said Stacey Johnson, Regional Innovation Officer for the NENY Tech Hub. “These accomplishments highlight the strong ecosystem we have cultivated in Upstate New York, where collaborations and initiatives like EDA's Build Back Regional Challenge and NSF Engine funding drive innovation and workforce development. The connections made at events like the Innovative Capital Summit are critical to leveraging capital to further strengthen our programs and companies and advance our mission of driving impactful economic growth in the region.”
New Energy New York's regional growth and leadership capabilities are also highlighted by the accomplishments to date (100+ companies engaged across the supply chain, 5 training programs launched at various levels, over 1,000 people trained, 3 major philanthropic grants secured, 30+ startups supported, 6 companies conducting the first pilot storage demonstrations in New York State, and portfolio companies raising over $40 million in follow-on funding since 2022).
