The Verge Tech Survey 2020: what people think of Apple, Google, Facebook and more
The edge conducted its first national technology survey in the hangover of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, when Americans began to harness the broad reach and influence of major technology platforms. The survey found that the public was more and more skeptical of Facebook but still depended on it, saying it would miss the company's products if they did. disappeared. Amazon, on the other hand, has remained very popular with the American people: the majority of those questioned said that they liked it very much.
Two and a half years later, with the approach of another presidential election, these trends have accelerated. A larger proportion of the population has a very favorable opinion of Amazon, while more people have a very unfavorable view of Facebook than in 2016.
More importantly, Americans generally think that the biggest tech companies have too much power and should be split up. Among the survey respondents:
- 56% said government should dismantle tech companies if they control the economy too much
- 72 percent said Facebook had too much power
- 51 percent said Google and YouTube should be split into separate companies
With multiple investigations underway against tech giants at the national and federal levels and with the threat of even more regulation if a Democrat wins the presidency, there are good reasons for companies to pay attention to the rising anti-tech sentiment.
Not all news for tech companies is bad. Americans believe that Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix and YouTube have an overall positive effect on society. (They are more likely to think that Twitter, Slack, Instagram and Facebook have an overall negative effect.)
Microsoft leads large tech companies in number of Americans who say they trust them, 75% of survey respondents. Amazon follows closely, at 73%. Facebook lags behind: only 41% of Americans say they trust the company to protect their personal information.
These are the conclusions of the second Edge Tech Trust survey. This survey was conducted in December among 1,123 people, representative of the United States at the national level. The sample error is 3% at a 95% confidence level.
