The national strike in France for many years has severely damaged schools and transport.
Employees are outraged by pension reforms that will allow them to retire later or face reduced payments.
Teachers and transport staff have been brought together by police, lawyers, hospital and airport staff and other professions for the general walk.
President Emmanuel Macron wants to introduce a universal pension system based on points.
This will replace the current French system, which has 42 different pension schemes in its private and public sectors, with changes in retirement age and benefits.
