Sawtooth National Forest reported at the weekend that Stanley Bay Beach had collapsed as a result of the March 31 earthquake.

Forest services officials were initially alerted to the beach collapse after several recreational users reported deep flood waters in the entrance delta where Lake Stanley Lake Creek pours into the lake. Julie Thomas, a spokeswoman for the Sawtio National Entertainment District, said in a statement that a subsequent review of Idaho’s geological survey using satellite imagery attributed the collapse to a 6.5-magnitude earthquake in March.

According to government geologist Claudio Berti, the entrance beach, which was previously a popular fishing and boat launch area, probably collapsed due to “liquefaction and pressure of saturated sediments and some potential slippage and lateral spread”.

Fortunately, the camp infrastructure has been moved near the entrance to the eastern side of the lake in a recent project, deputy district guard Brian Anderson said. A new boat ramp was also completed in 2019.

He said: “The loss of the beach intended for fishing and recreation is unfortunate because this area was very popular with lake visitors.”

Thomas said that a team of geologists at the Geological Survey in Idaho State led by Bertie are planning to visit the site and complete their assessment in the coming weeks.
